We're out of here!

If you're reading this, you'll be on your lonesome I'm afraid, as the move to Boarding Area is complete.

Please follow GhettoIFE at http://www.ghettoife.com or at http://www.boardingarea.com/blogs/ghettoife

Thanks and come fly with us at our new home!

So this is probably the penultimate post on Blogger

Ok, I've been a bit coy about the changes that are coming up, but as the blog is in the process of migrating, here's the full skinny.

A few weeks ago I was extended an invitation to move to a different service (in fact - just before I swanned off to Toronto), and I've been thinking about it.

And there's been a lot of work going on in the background. And I mean a *LOT*  (in fact - now the blog is copied to the new site, I'm having to re-populate the keywords and catagories. When there's 1407 posts, that's one hell of a lot of work in the next few days)

So where am I moving to? You've guessed it.

I'm proud to announce that www.ghettoife.com will be moving to Boarding Area in the next few days.  The blogger site ( http://ghettoife.blogger.com ) will remain accessible over the next few days whilst the migration is completed, and Google adjusts itself

In the meantime, until you see the new site at Boarding Area, it's business as normal here - and that means not a lot at the moment until the move is complete.

Please bear with me the next few days as the move is completed - I'm hoping this will be worth it for all of us.

Kevin.

Blog Admin: Blog Frozen for a bit.

My dear readers.

Due to some pretty exciting things that are going on at GhettoIFE.com towers, I'm afraid that I have had to freeze the blog temporaryly "as is".

Commenting is switched off for a bit which this is going on, but hopefully service will resume in a day or so... and hopefully on the new server.

Whilst I haven't got any compensation vouchers, I'll offer up a picture instead:

I'll catch you all on the flip side ;)

FR: Which? attacks over the Ryanair's new PrePaid MasterCard...

As covered last week at GhettoIFE.com, the Ryanair PrePaid MasterCard rates were announced.

Well this week, Which? (the consumer group) has branded the card as "An Insult" to it's Ryanair's customers.

Or to quote Which? fully they belive the card is "insult to UK consumers who have little opportunity to avoid such fees".

Ouch.

Ryanair argue the card will be more accessible, and available for purchase on it's website.

From November 1st 2011, the only way to avoid paying a booking fee when flying Ryanair will be to use their specific pre-paid MasterCard. Up until then,  Pre-Paid MasterCards of all sorts will be accepted.

It's worth at this point running through the fees you'll face to avoid the £6 per leg administration fee.
  • A £6 fee for applying for the card – reimbursed in the form of Ryanair vouchers when you buy your first flight.
  • A £2 fee when withdrawing money from an ATM
  • A £4.00 fee for an o over the counter withdrawall
  • A £0.50 for using the card to pay for a purchase in the UK after the first six months the card is issued
  • You have to load a minimum of £150 onto the card.
  • Non use fee of £2.50 a month
  • Negative balance fee of £10.00.
  • Want to buy off the card in a Foreign Country? That's 5.75% per transaction. (A Visa Credit Card will normally levy 2.75%~3%)

Which? has it's full rundown at http://www.which.co.uk/news/2011/10/ryanair-launches-costly-cash-passport-prepaid-card-266880/

My advice remains the same from my last post- I believe this is what is called "business and profitability" in some places... and in others "Taking the mick". I'll leave you to work out which is which.

AA: The Vultures Begin to Circle

If you're an American Airlines stockholder, then you'll probably be feeling the vultures circling with the 33% drop in share value yesterday, on fears that AA's parent - AMR may have to seek Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection.

At one point, shares in AMR dived by 41%, with share trading halted. The problems AMR has are the twisted combination of high debt, sluggish demand and losses after loss, with analyists suggesting that losses will continue well into 2012.

Lots of different rumours are thought to be at the centre of the sell-off.

An AMR spokesperson stated that Chapter 11 bankruptcy "is certainly not our goal".

For everyone involved at AA - I hope it doesn't turn into Chapter 11. But these are hard times for everyone, anything could... and probably will happen.

A3: Greek ATC Shutdown - expect others to follow.

If you're planning to fly to Greece on the 5th October... here's a hint - start planning alterntives as Greek ATC is due to go out on strike that day.

Aegean Airlines has already killed their entire programme of flying on the 5th October http://en.aegeanair.com/all-about-us/press-office/press-releases/press-release/?prid=324, whilst Olympic has not made an annoucement yet. EasyJet has posted it's thoughts at http://easyjet.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3970/~/current-travel-status

If the strike goes ahead expect chaos and start replanning NOW.

UA: Lazy rebrand of the day

The ongoing merger of United and Continental goes apace with the annoucement that the airline has decided what it's going to do about it's lounges. On the United side, it was The Red Carpet Clubs, meanwhile on the Continental side, they're know as Presidents Clubs.

So with those rich heritages, what do you think United is calling their clubs going forward?

Have a good guess.

Done guessing? Correct. It's

United Clubs

Commencing 1st October.

The lounges will continue to offer all the ameinities (complimentary bar service, light snacks, beverages, WiFi, conference rooms, work stations, operational assistance with flights), with vauge planes to remodel lounges in the future to add workstations and other features.

It seems seems like United got the discount deal at the Brand Strategy Boutique that day. Is it a change I like? It's a lazy change.... .

Stelios's Fastjet... Long Haul Ambitions...

The Sunday Telegraph has managed to talk to Sir Stelios about his plans for FastJet.

According to the peice, FastJet will take on the Long Haul flights as oppsed competing on the short-haul EuroRoutes.

The name Fastjet is however a holding name for the project. The name "Stelios" is being banded around as a brand.

Meanwhile the rumbling fight that is brewing between Sir Stelios and EasyJet (of which Stelios's family owns 37.4%), of which EasyJet may seek a high court injunction to stop Stelios doing what he does best.

The skies are alas littered with Long Haul Startups (in particular, EOS, MaxJet, Zoom), but it seems the time is right for investors to try again (with Singapore Airlines LCC starting up, Air Asia X giving it a good go). However, for those long haul flights, making savings on "dead time" on the ground is going to tough work.

Can they make it work? I'm honestly not sure.

Seems like I'm not the only one to have trouble getting into Canada....

From the BBC News Web site, it seems that I'm not the only person to have issues with customs in Canada.

Russell Brand also has had trouble and was rejected entry into Canada based on "priors 10 years ago", and had to divert the plane he was on to a Canadian Customs port, rather than a little field somewhere else.

The show he was due to perform - was cancelled (although how people find him funny is beyond me)

Well, being detained at the Canadain Border is never fun. Trust me on this one.
