It seems American Airlines has decided maybe it's time to invest in expanding it's international growth, and has ordered two Boeing 777-300ER's from the options it has with Boeing.
Subject to contracts being firmed up and local issues, these aircraft are due for delivery in latter part of 2012.
This makes AA a rarity in the USA - the first carrier to use 777-300ER's (Air Canada beat it to the punch some time ago ordering 777-300ER's for their long haul fleet)
The 777-300ER's have a larger capacity and will allow American a bit of growth at slot constrained airports, or on routes where they need more capacity on longhaul routes - or even to release other aircraft onto other runs whilst maintaining the new aircraft on traditional routes.
They follow fellow OneWorld member British Airways who is a recent convert to 777-300ER operations.
