It's Wednesday Lunchtime, and it's time for who's brought what.
Kuwait's ALAFCO has opened it chequebook, ordering a further six Airbus A350-900's, taking its orders for the class up to 18 aircraft.
Russian carrier UTAir has signed with Boeing for 40 737NG aircraft, made up of 33 737-800's and 7 737-900ERs.
Meanwhile it seems Hong Kong Airlines has come forward as the owner of the 15 Boeing 747-8I's that have been ordered. In addition, it's being mumbled that they're also ordering six Airbus A380-800's too.
The owning company of Hong Kong Airlines - HNA Group is also ordering 30 787-9s, six 777 Freighters, and two 787-8s in VIP configuration as well. So they have a fair bit of cash to play with from the sounds of it.
In Airbus A320Neo news, Avianca-TACA has signed a MOU for 51 frames, 33 of which will be A320neo's.
Meanwhile, Republic Airways (owner of Frontier as well as a variety of Regional carriers) has has tentatively signed to take 40 Airbus A319neos and 40 A320neos, making them the launch customer of the A319neo series.
As usual, things are fast moving in Paris. In the late evening update, a clearer picture should emerge of what Hong Kong Airlines is actually doing.....

Farnborough Day 3
So as we end Day 3 of Farnborough, a lot of the big deals have been done. Lets see what's rocking and rolling today.....
RBS Aviation buys a selection of planes.
Yes - lessors are doing a lot of trade this show, and it's RBS Aviation turn to make an order.
This time RBS Aviation Capital is purchasing 95 frames - 52 Airbus A320-family and 43 Boeing 737 family aircraft (although actual subtypes have yet to be agreed).
This will keep the lines at Renton and Toulouse running quite nicely. Leased aircraft of course go to a variety of operators.
Garuda Indonesia expands fleet - order A330-200.
Garuda Indonesia has ordered 6 Airbus A330-200s, that will be delivered during 2012. For this little order Garuda is upgrading its fleet. Which is nice.
Germania confirms order for 5 A319's.
Germania is in a mood to swap aircraft, and is purchasing five A319's, swapping them for the existing Boeing 737 fleet, replacing them for Charter and Scheduled/Subleased routes.
Deliveries begin in 2011.
Republic further commits itself to more E-Jets
The mega-regional airline (and wannabe mainline player) Republic Airlines has signed a memo with Embraer for more E-Jet's, in particular the E-190 (convertible to E-195's), with an eye to deploying them with Frontier as they are very suitable for use in Denver and other hot and high airports (Denver being Frontier's base)
AA gets the Boeing Bug and orders more 737-800's
American Airlines announced today will take up the options it has with Boeing for an addiitonal 35 737-800 aircraft
Delivery is to take place in 2011 and 2012, in a bid to start replacing the ageing MD-80's that AA insists on keeping in the air - and with a 35% fuel advantage, it's no small cost.
Right - that's your lot for today - as most of the big deals have been done, it's now a slow wind down for the public to start visiting Farnborough. Who knows, there might be some big game out there still....

Republic finally decides which brand would survive... and it...
... Frontier Airlines!
Indeed - the airline with the animals on the tail (Frontier Airlines) will be the name of the combined Republic and Midwest Airlines, merging the Airbus fleets of Frontier and ERJ-190 fleets of Midwest together.
So what does this mean (lets get down to the nitty gritty)
Indeed - the airline with the animals on the tail (Frontier Airlines) will be the name of the combined Republic and Midwest Airlines, merging the Airbus fleets of Frontier and ERJ-190 fleets of Midwest together.
So what does this mean (lets get down to the nitty gritty)
- All booking valid.
- Systems have to merge eventually.
- More routes pairs to be introduced.
- Frequent flyers miles - Both Programmes are combining into one. Stay tuned.
- Fleet and Work integration - lots of work ahead, expect fun with the unions. 12 to 18 months of fun.
- Paintwork- Well since it's Frontier, there are going to be a lot more animals on planes - inducing the first ERJ painted with a Badger (the state animal of Wisconsin) - as yet unnamed. The people of Wisconsin will decide the animal's name...
- Midwest Cookies - Believe it or not, they'll be going fleetwide/servicewide.

The News Roundup
Sorry I haven't had a chance to do this this past two weeks - life at Kevin Towers has been close to a living hell. Those who know the words "Exchange Server Migration" will know where I'm coming from. As last weeks news is more or less irrelevant like any news (ask the The Daily Mail after this weeks furoiri over the death of Steven Gately commentary piece by one of their so-called columnists), this is from last Saturday to today.
Lufthansa IFE - adds a C with the return of LONG HAUL KU BAND INTERNET SERVICES
This is a BIG thing as companies develop ways of getting out their holes. LH is once again going to have a go at delivering In-Flight Internet Services. Originally delivered as Boeing Connexition, LH has signed a Deal with Panasonic eXConnect - for rollout in late 2010 on LH only - BMI, Austrian or Swiss need not apply - yet.
Delivered over the KU band this is satellite to aircraft mobile connectivity. Along with Row 44 (who are equiping Southwest's 737 ENTIRE fleet) and Aircell, the battle of Internet Connectivity is starting to warm up...

Boeing 748-8F - Growing Pains.
It seems Boeing is just not having ANY Luck with airframes with the first flight of the first 747-8F being pushed back from first flight on Dec 9th and delivery next year to Q3 2010. Delays have been placed firmly at the door of the minor engineering errors that have been missed thanks to the resource pulling to get the 787 out of the hanger.
Expect more delays here - I'm seeing nothing from Boeing to indicate this frame will be out of the barn on schedule.

Cathay Pacific - 2% traffic drop in September
Its still bad if you're a premium carrier as CX is proving. With a few "local" events, there is a small traffic upswing, but it is extremely tough going out there

Avianca-TACA tie up to go toe-to-toe with COPA.
It seems COPA Airlines will have a challenge shortly with the tie up of Avianca and Groupo TACA pooling their resources and joining forces. COPA says their network will be strong enough to resist.
I'm not sure - with COPA's exit from Skyteam on the 25th October, they'll be partnerless for a fair bit before entry to the Star Alliance is considered...
Avanica-TACA don't want a flight it seems, as they wish to grow resources instead of going toe-to-toe with LAN or COPA. We'll see on that front.

Blended winglets save cash - Air New Zealand.
Apart from getting neekid and doing the bodypaint thing, Air New Zealand appear to run airline services too, with good cash and fuel savings on the 767 fleet which have blended winglets.
Improved deployment has meant 19% fuel savings - or 7 Dillon liters of fuel a year. That's a lot of go-go juice - before you get the green crowd happy.
That and those blended winglets do look very cute on a plane. More on Winglets in a GhettoIFE.com article when I get round to finishing it.

Air India switches entirely to Boeing 777's from it's motley collection of aircraft. Also gets bailed out at the same time
All westbound flights from India have been switched to 777's - as well as Toyko. As well as that, Air India has been bailed out by it's home government to the tune of US$1.1 Billion which is to be delivered in wages.
Alas, there are wage cut concerns as well with this change with a previous strike the week before. Expect further fireworks shortly...

US Airways gets shot of its E-190's to... Oh guess who.
The fleapit of the Star Alliance has thrown in the towel with it's E-190 operations - and has flogged them to.. Republic (who incidednly helped US Purchase them in the first place). Initally the first four will go to Midwest Airlines.
Of course, this means more cuts and job losses at US...

Unions tell BA - Hold off on cuts
Unite has stomped its foot up and down telling BA to try and stave off the cuts that are needed. Further talks are upcoming on the 21/10. However, if they don't go well, strike action is on the horizon..

Mesa consider more CRJ-200's to GO! to the Hawaiian Islands.
After driving Aloha out of the market, Mesa is considering deploying a 6th CRJ-200 over to the islands, with Shuttle America E-170's moving out, and CRJ-200's moving in to meet size and requirments.
What a downgrade. More on the flying coffin that is the CRJ-200 in a few weeks.
717's head south of the border to Mexicana.
Mexicana is accelerating the collection of it's 717 fleet with the displacing of the Midwest 717s, with 10 currently in service, and the full collection in-sitiu before the end of 2010with delays down to pilot training if anything.
The 717 as readers know is basicly a warmed over MD-90 with new avionics - which although is a very good beast isn't compatible with the previous MD series or Boeings own 737 series.
It's good to see these birds still flying.
Air France considers PE Cabin on A380s and decides to copy other carriers.
With the rapid introduction of Premium Voyageur shortly on 777's, they would like to deploy them on their new A380's... if they can actually consider the retrofit to the aircraft.
In better news, A380 traffic between Paris CDG - New York JFK is due to kick off on 23rd November.

The News: A New base, Cuts, Profits causing trouble...
Continental: Joins Star Alliance 27th October (Official)
Continental have confirmed they are to leave SkyTeam on the 24th October and formally join Star Alliance on the 27th October.
Expect trouble if things go wrong - and knowing how other airlines have handled integrations before - trouble isn't fare off.

Ryainair Opens a new base a Jimmy Savile International - I mean Leeds Bradford Airport
The odious little man is doing some good this week, and has announced the opening of a new base at LBA, where 2 aircraft will be based. Estimated 1000 jobs to come in. Whilst this is good for the area (as BMI pulled out earlier this year), this could spell trouble for Jet2 and FlyBe. New routes are: Carcassonne, Malta, Faro, Montpellier, Ibiza, Murcia, Knock, Nantes, Krakow,Palma, Limoges, Pisa, Malaga,Venice Treviso.
Yes, there's a fare sale, but in Ryanair land - every day is a fare sale!

SAS is going from bad to worse alas, with another net loss of kr1.05bn, and is cutting another 1000 jobs in the process under it's coreSAS programme. In addition, they'll be asking for paycuts from crew as well.

Brazilian Carrier Gol is doing the impossible and actual has posted a rather tidy R$354 profit in Q2, whilst managing and reducing costs... and selling R$104 million worth of miles to institutions to sell on.

Virgin Blue cancels all United Codeshares
Wholey expected as Virgin Blue and V Australia is snuggling up to Delta, and telling UA to find a partner to dance with in Australia to feed into their SYD services. Whilst Virgin Blue is happy to tart with other carriers, it wants no part of a global alliance. UA fliers heading to Australia had better open up a QF OneWorld Account to start throwing those spare miles into....

SouthWest is desperate for some Frontier LUV from the Courts... AND DOESN'T GET IT
SouthWest Airlines is seemingly desperate for Frontier and has upped it's bid to US$170m for the airline. Cranky has an excellent analysis of what it means, but it does mean an inital fleet reduction to 40 Airbus A320 Series and the possible creation of "SouthWest Express" - as well as the elimination of a competitor.
And in late breaking news, it's been confirmed that Republic Airlines have won the auction for $150m, citing management of seniority lists.

Air Asia X debating IFE+C
Air Asia X are to explore options in terms of connectivity for its inbound fleet of A350's... but the big question is how - it's a big out of pocked expense initially... so how is it going to be funded? Fun times.
It's also worth nothing that Air Asia (and its other LCC's Thai AirAsia and Indonesia Air Asia) have signed with OnAir to provide in flight Telephony hardware (who also provide RyanAir). I'd personally expect a similar deal along the line

Delta goes for Handheld IFE on it's 747 fleet whilst sticking the words "FOR SALE" on them
Meanwhile Delta 747 fans can start panicking... now. Rather than going for a complete internal refurbishment, Delta is going for Handheld IFE units for all classes. Whilst a great idea for a quick and easy deployment, this translates that Delta are no longer prepared to invest in a major upgrade for the 747 fleet (apart from painting the planes, changing seat covers, added DL product to them. However, its seen as a fill in solution until some more twinjet aircraft are located (777-200LR probably )
Now whilst you're at it Delta - any chance you can get some spares for your 767 fleet?

Airline news Roundup
Well it's near the end of the week (and it's been awful here) so lets do some news that might affect you.. or not
BA's food Debcale
Need I say much more? No signs of climbdown or anything alas.
Qatar Wuss out - I mean "reassured by Boeing" over 787
Showing that indeed airlines are slaves to airframe makers sometimes, it seems Qatar are happy with the "reassurance" of the 787 programme, with the threat of cancellations (30+30) seem to be put aside for now.
Saying that, they're accepting only frames from 2012, and not the overweight planes. Boeing have their work seriously cut out I suspect...
Southwest heads to the Frontier
Seems as though its bargin time in the US Aviation industry as SouthWest Airlines are putting in a bid for Frontier Airlines, citing as strongest bid by all interested parties, including Frontier employees, management and its creditors.
How they'll operate it is anohter matter - SouthWest is 737-xxx shop, where as Frointier is an Airbus A32x and a Dash shop - be it as wholey owned to start with. However, with economies of scale - I doubt that a mixed fleet will last for long for...
Of course - the courts could just sell everything to Republic Airlines... Speaking of which...
Republic of Hawiai. A bit of Mokulele anyone?
With Republic Airlines seemingly spreading itself far and wide, it investment in Mokulelele is paying off with higher passenger numbers. However profit is eluding them (which lets face it - not many airlines are turning that much of a profit these days)
And speaking of losses....
Singapore looses money behind the sofa, Lufthansa tries not to loose much more
Seems like all the big airlines are feeling at the moment, with SIA loosing over $212 million, and Lufthansa making a small profit of $8 million. Seems like cargo, pax and trade is down across the board.
Stand by for more cuts.
Ethiopian Airlines go for it - Orders A350's and 777's
I'll freely admit this was off my radar, but Ethiopian are going for a major expansion with the orders of 5 777-200LR's and 12 A350's. With what longhaul fleet they have a the moment (767's) this is one heck of an expansion combined with the 787 fleet on order.
And they've tied up with Lufthansa to share M+M earning and rewards - Who can sniff a possible entry into Star Alliance here?
Turkish Airlines have spare cash to splash - Orders 777's
It seems the experience of leasing the Jet Airways 777's is paying off with TK ordering an extra 7 aircraft, taking the ordering commitment to 12 777-300ER's. Depending on the configuration used, I suspect this is going to work out very well for TK with a good First class product and reasonable C and Y....

Qatar Wuss out - I mean "reassured by Boeing" over 787
Showing that indeed airlines are slaves to airframe makers sometimes, it seems Qatar are happy with the "reassurance" of the 787 programme, with the threat of cancellations (30+30) seem to be put aside for now.
Saying that, they're accepting only frames from 2012, and not the overweight planes. Boeing have their work seriously cut out I suspect...
Southwest heads to the Frontier
Seems as though its bargin time in the US Aviation industry as SouthWest Airlines are putting in a bid for Frontier Airlines, citing as strongest bid by all interested parties, including Frontier employees, management and its creditors.
How they'll operate it is anohter matter - SouthWest is 737-xxx shop, where as Frointier is an Airbus A32x and a Dash shop - be it as wholey owned to start with. However, with economies of scale - I doubt that a mixed fleet will last for long for...
Of course - the courts could just sell everything to Republic Airlines... Speaking of which...
Republic of Hawiai. A bit of Mokulele anyone?
With Republic Airlines seemingly spreading itself far and wide, it investment in Mokulelele is paying off with higher passenger numbers. However profit is eluding them (which lets face it - not many airlines are turning that much of a profit these days)
And speaking of losses....
Singapore looses money behind the sofa, Lufthansa tries not to loose much more
Seems like all the big airlines are feeling at the moment, with SIA loosing over $212 million, and Lufthansa making a small profit of $8 million. Seems like cargo, pax and trade is down across the board.
Stand by for more cuts.
Ethiopian Airlines go for it - Orders A350's and 777's
I'll freely admit this was off my radar, but Ethiopian are going for a major expansion with the orders of 5 777-200LR's and 12 A350's. With what longhaul fleet they have a the moment (767's) this is one heck of an expansion combined with the 787 fleet on order.
And they've tied up with Lufthansa to share M+M earning and rewards - Who can sniff a possible entry into Star Alliance here?
