Meanwhile a bit further across Asia, Cathay Pacific is busy buying new aircraft - this time another 4 Boeing 777-300ER's
On top of this they've ordered much more cargo capacity in the form of 8 Boeing 777-200 freighters.
Meanwhile Singapore Airlines too have decided to expand their fleet by ordering an extra 8 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to allow it to phase out older aircraft and expand as needed.
Their aircraft are destined for Long Haul and Medium Haul routes, and due to begin arriving in 2013, adding to the existing 19 777-300ER's in their fleet.
The 777-300ER of course is a stretch of the Boeing 777 that has curried favour with airlines due to the amount of bums of seats you can fit in with low operational costs compared to a 747-400. So much so, the biggest competitor to the passenger 747-8i is.... their own 777-300ER.

CX: They want you feel... their new Aircraft...
Cathay Pacific have been busy (like me I'm afraid) and have annouced an order with both Boeing and Airbus:
Alas, painting an aircraft orange and red did nothing to convince Cathay to order the 747-8I's.....
- From Airbus, they'll be ordering 15 A330-300's
- From Boeing, they'll be ordering 10 B777-300ER's
- And from a leasing company a pair of A350-900's

CX: They want you feel... New Business Class seats.
Cathay Pacific have been busy it seems, and as well as new routes, they've launched a new Business Class Seat.

So lets do some quick checks:
It's being installed on a lot of birds:
- On all New long haul A330-300 deliveries (March 2011)
- On all new Boeing 777-300ER deliveries (April 2011)
Rollout will then continue to all Long Haul A330-300's and 777-300ER by 2013 - a total of 50 aircraft
The seat and the bed form out to some nice numbers:
Information - Cathay Pacific.
Long Haul A330's will be deployed on the Austrailan runs, and the 777-300ER's will see action to New York, Los Angeles and London.
Initial impressions are positive, and a welcome change from the Herringbone style seats that are currently used - however, the proof in this pudding is in the eating. And I bet flyers will be eating this up from March next year....

CX: They Feel.. Chicago and more feeling of New York.
Cathay Pacific has decided to feel a new city, and are off to Chicago, whilst boosting it's New York Services, with CX announcing...
Operated by a Boeing 777-300ER, Cathay will run a daily non-stop service from Hong Kong to Chicago and back.
Commences: 01/09/2011, Times are local, accounting for International Date Line
As well as Chicago, for those who don't want to wander to the Mid-west, East Coast to Hong Kong services are being beefed up too, with the addition of a 3rd service from HKG to JFK.
This will be thrice weekly from 27 March 2011 going daily 02 May 2011, being a non stop flight with a Boeing 777-300ER
All other services - including the one-stopper via Vancouver (for those who want to remember what service is when flying in North America) will remain available.
A nice expansion. But how much Robbie Williams can you taken when on hold to them?

CX: They want you to feel....
Ok, I've been waiting for a moment to unleash this and as the Hong Kong photos will be appearing on the photoblog in a few days, there is one reminder of Hong Kong (and Seoul for that matter) that has managed to burn into my brain.
And that's Cathay Pacific burning Robbie Williams into my head thanks to their sponsorship on BBC World News.
Lets have some examples:

CX: Cathay flashes the cash - orders A350's and 777's....
Well there seems to be some money floating around - this time in Asia with Cathay Pacific in the mood to buy.
Cathay has signed a letter of intent to purchase 30 A350-900 aircraft from Airbus, whilst at the same time to exercise existing purchase rights for six Boeing 777-300ERs.
Cathay expects the A350s to be delivered between 2016 and 2019, which Cathay say will form its backbone of the mid-sized wide-body fleet, with plans to operate these aircraft across its network, focusing on routes to Europe and North America.
Meanwhile, the 777-300ER's will be on top of the 30 existing, taking it to 36 aircraft. 18 of which have been received, and the rest to be deployed by 2013.

One Day, Three Incidents.
It's been a busy olde day in the world of Aircraft doing odd things.
Lets start from the top:
Merpati Nusantara Airlines, Flight 836 met with a nasty end after a flight between Sorong and Manokwari, Indonesia.
The flight, operated by Boeing 737-300, overran the runway on landing, coming to a rest 200 meters beyond it. The aircraft broke into several pieces on halting, with 109 people aboard (103+6) with 3 serious injuries, 20 major injuries but all board escaped alive.
Officials said heavy rain may have caused the crash but that the pilots had followed safety regulations.
As a side note, Merpati Nusantara Airlines are on the EU Blacklist for flying to and from the EU due to the safety record (not their equipment would make it)
Cathay Pacific have trouble with one of their A330's.
In their first major incident for 35 years, A Cathay Pacific A330 Flight CX780, from Surabaya, Indonesia to Hong Kong due to a suspected left engine problem shutting down on approach .

An emergency evacuation of passengers was initiated after the aircraft landed as can be seen on the pictures, with slides deployed.
There were 323 people aboard (309+14) and 8 passengers were injured during the evacuation - two of which have been discharged.
All four tires on the left of the aircraft and two on the right deflated, and they were designed to deflate in emergency situations to prevent them from bursting, Cathay Pacific Airways' Chief Executive Tony Tyler said.
Asked about engine problems, the cause has yet to be determined and a report on the matter will be released in about four weeks.
Chemical Fumes cause AA flight to divert.
And finally it seems, an American Airlines AA49 was also having problems with a Boeing 767-300 with a Paris to Dallas service. when reports of chemical fumes in the cabin causing crew dizziness.
The Boeing 767 landed safely just after 1345 GMT. No-one was injured out of the 145 (133+12).
American Airlines have stated "No further details are available at this time, but engineers are currently investigating the potential source of any fumes".
A rescue aircraft will be on the way to pick up the stranded passengers.
Prehaps the most important thing to say is that whilst there was some injuries in these incidients, every person has got out alive.
That has got to count for something.
